Until recently, the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class was the most reliable SUV in mass production. There are many legends and real situations about the reliability and passability of this model, but, as the latest recall campaigns in Russia and the world show, breakdowns are not in favor of the car. Not so long ago, a new generation of Mercedes-Benz G-Class has already been recalled due to a leaking turbocharger and a breakdown of the electrical wiring in the car doors. Now the revocable Gelikov campaign has begun due to a breakdown of the differential lock. In this model, there are three of them, and each can be forcibly blocked.
If you believe the documents of NHTSA, the National Traffic Safety Administration in the United States, the problem with locking differentials became known back in 2018, almost immediately after the first deliveries of the new generation Gelendvagen SUVs. It was then that the first complaints from the owners of freshly baked SUVs began to arrive. As a rule, the owners of Gelikov complained about problems with the locking of the rear axle differential, which did not always work.
Immediately after receiving the first complaints, the manufacturer removed the defective parts and conducted an internal investigation. The search for problems lasted until April 2019 inclusive. As it turned out, the cause was a resistor from the discharge of electronics. It is he who is responsible for the mechanical operation of the differential lock. From a number of studies, it became known that due to the sulfur grease in the differential, which emits vapors, the resistor collapses over time, respectively, an incorrect current value is obtained at the output. It is because of this that the ECU decides that the differential is in a locked state, which means that the mechanical part of the lock simply does not work out the task. Additionally, due to such an error, the system disables ESP and ABS, without which driving on the road turns into torment.
Moreover, on the dashboard of the completely new Mercedes-Benz G-Class, errors and notifications of vehicle malfunctions appear. The reason for this was the resistor supplier. He deviated from the norms that were supplied by the customer. According to available data, this led to the recall of the Heliks in the United States, in the amount of 6,300 copies. On the territory of Russia, according to the list of VIN codes of Rosstandart, 1,644 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUVs fall under the recall. The situation will be corrected by replacing parts of proper quality, as well as the owners of this model will be asked to observe for the first time the quality of the new resistor, how well the differential lock task is being performed.
