French carmakers have long earned fame as the creators of striking, extravagant and extremely unusual cars that, whether you like it or not, magnetically attract the eyes of those around you. And a striking example of this was the new model from Citroen, which received the fancy name "Cactus".

The car is based on the C4 model and is a so-called "pseudo-crossover", which attracted a lot of attention even at the stage of conceptual development.

By the way, for the first time a concept version of the car was shown in 2013, although in fairness it is worth noting that most of the ideas for the novelty were taken from the concept models of the 2007 Cactus Concept and the 2010 Lacoste Concept.

The pre-production version of the car saw the world in 2014 as part of the annual Paris Motor Show. At the same time, the manufacturer showed the future stage of development of the model, which was embodied in the ideas of the conceptual C4 Cactus Airflow 2L, capable of boasting an impressively economical fuel consumption of some 2 l / 100 km.

But back to the 2015 C4 Cactus review. Running a little ahead of myself, I would like to note that the French managed to create an extremely defiant and original car, and this applies not only to the exterior, but also to the interior design. True, the manufacturer equipped the Cactus with engines that do not differ in high power, so this car is unlikely to be to the liking of fans to press the pedal to the floor and burn wheel rubber.

Exterior of the new Citroen C4 Cactus

It is simply impossible not to notice the Citroen C4 Cactus in the city traffic, this is facilitated not only by the quirky design, but also by a wide selection of bright body colors, which is one of the main highlights of the car.

The front part of the "cactus" flaunts the original two-story optics, a small false radiator grille of a rectangular shape and a wide trapezoidal air intake, built into a rather massive front bumper together with two foglights.

The profile of the car is distinguished by original rims, inflated wheel arches and Airbump protective linings, which are filled with air and are designed to provide protection from scratches and impacts. It is worth noting that, if desired, the linings are easy to replace, and there are several different color variations at the buyer's choice.

The stern of the pseudo-crossover received a massive rear bumper, rectangular marker lights and a large tailgate, above which there is a neat spoiler.

Special attention should be paid to a special plastic body kit located along the entire perimeter of the car body, which gives the external appearance of aggressiveness and "off-road".

The dimensions of the new C4 Cactus are:

  • In length - 4157 mm;
  • Wide - 1729 mm;
  • In height - 1480 mm (or 1530 mm with roof rails);
  • Wheelbase machines - 2595 mm.

The car's ground clearance is only 140 mm, which once again reminds us that this is not an SUV or even a full-fledged crossover. However, Citroen C4 Cactus is primarily a car for the city, where it feels more than confident.

The curb weight of the car is equal to some 965 kg, which was achieved through the use of special high-strength grades of steel and aluminum.

Interior of the C4 Cactus

Following the exterior, the novelty received an equally original and practical interior. The front panel has received a simple yet extravagant architecture. The main role here is assigned to two liquid crystal displays: the first plays the role of a digital dashboard, and the second is the screen of the multimedia information complex, which displays the bulk of the information necessary for the driver.

The three-spoke steering wheel is slightly truncated at the bottom and allows you to control the music and readings of the on-board computer.

Particular attention is drawn to leather hinges that act as door handles, as well as a glove box that looks like an old suitcase - only the French were capable of such stylistic solutions.

Also, one cannot fail to highlight the fact that instead of the familiar to all gearshift knobs, the Citroen C4 Cactus received three buttons: reverse, neutral and drive, the control of which requires some getting used to.

Inside the car there are two sofas - one in the front and the second in the back, and the rear sofa received a one-piece back, which was done to reduce the cost of the car. The front seats, despite their couch-like appearance, have good lateral support and allow a person of any size to sit comfortably.

The rear seats easily take on board three adult passengers, while only two riders will feel at ease here, which is due to the small width of the body.

It is somewhat surprising that instead of full-fledged rear windows, passengers of the second row have to be content with small vents, which, as we see it, was also done to reduce the cost of the car.

Trunk volume is small at 358 liters, while it can be increased to 1170 liters by lowering the back of the second row. There is a full-size spare wheel in the underground luggage compartment, which no doubt adds to the advantages of the car.

In general, the salon of "Cactus" leaves a pleasant impression, which is facilitated by the original architecture of the front panel, good finishing materials and high-quality fit of parts.

Specifications Citroen C4 Cactus 2015

The line of power units is represented by 5 engines - three gasoline engines and two diesels. Gasoline engines have the same volume of 1.2 liters, but different power outputs: 75, 82 and 110 hp. Diesel versions are represented by two 1.6-liter engines, 92 and 100 hp.

The main feature of all engines is their efficiency - the fuel consumption of gasoline versions is on average 5 l / 100 km, and diesel - only 3.3-3.5 l / 100 km. At the same time, the language does not turn to call the car a high-spirited one, the acceleration from 0 to 100 in the most powerful version takes 9.3 seconds, and the maximum speed is 188 km / h. Buyers can choose from three types of transmissions: 5-level manual transmission, as well as 5 and 6-level "robot" ETG.

At the heart of the C4 Cactus, despite the name, is the "trolley" of the more affordable Citroen C3, which is also used on the Peugeot 208/2008. This suggests that the front of the car is based on an independent suspension pseudo-MacPherson, and the rear - on a semi-independent torsion beam.

The car's suspension copes well with domestic irregularities, and it is difficult to break through it even in the case of assault on large irregularities. The braking system is presented at the front with ventilated disc brakes, and at the rear - conventional drum or disc brakes.

Currently, the car is produced exclusively in a front-wheel drive configuration, while the manufacturer does not hide the fact that in the near future the car may acquire an all-wheel drive system, which will make the Cactus even more attractive in the eyes of the Russian buyer.

Safety

Like any other modern car, the car received a whole set of systems responsible for the active and passive safety of the driver and passengers, which are already available in the basic configuration. Among them:

  • Anti-lock braking and roll-over prevention system;
  • Traction control and exchange rate stabilization system;
  • Side and front airbags, where the latter are located not on the front panel, but at the base of the ceiling;
  • Cruise control;
  • Pretensioner belts and fasteners for ISOFIX child seats.

For additional money, the car can be equipped with an emergency braking system, a rear-view camera and parking sensors, as well as a parking assistant, thanks to which it becomes several times easier to park a car on tight city streets.

According to Euro NCAP crash tests, the car received 4 stars out of a maximum 5, which indicates the high safety of the vehicle in both frontal and side collisions.

Also, the safety of the car is affected by the use of new, better grades of steel, as Citroen representatives announced during the first presentation of the car, as well as special Airbump protective linings, which are an innovative solution, the task of which is to reduce the level of damage in side collisions.
