The segment of premium subcompact crossovers is relatively young, which does not prevent it from developing by leaps and bounds. So? at the beginning of last year in Russia, the German carmaker BMW and the British Jaguar almost simultaneously presented their new models - E-Pace and X2, designed to compete for leadership in their class.

We decided to conduct a combat comparison of crossovers and find out which of them deserves the attention of potential buyers and why.

Exterior of the Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2

Looking at the exterior of the BMW X2, you involuntarily catch yourself thinking that in front of you is a pumped up and slightly raised B-class hatchback - we do not undertake to judge whether this is good or bad.

The “muzzle” of the BMW is decorated with the branded “nostrils” of the false radiator grille, a stylish bumper and predatory head optics, while the profile and stern captivate with muscular wheel arches, spectacular marker lights and branded nameplates “BMW” located on the rear pillars.

Special attention should be paid to the presence of a sloping roof and a rising window line, which makes the appearance of the car more impetuous.

It would be logical if the exterior of the Jaguar E-Pace echoed the exterior of the "big brother" F-Pace, but the car has more in common with the sports car F-Type, which, as we think, can be safely attributed to the merits of the model.

Jaguar has an attractive and even somewhat cute appearance. The coupe-like profile of the "Briton" looks much more advantageous than the German opponent. A similar situation is with the stern, which at Jaguar looks, subjectively, more advantageous.

The British crossover looks much larger than the "German", which is confirmed by a comparison of the external dimensions of the "duelists":

Length, mm43954360
Width, mm19841824
Height, mm16491526
Wheel base, mm26812670

The situation is repeated when comparing the ground clearance, which in the X2 is only 182 mm (172 mm with the M-Sport package installed), while the E-Pace has a figure of 204 mm.

In addition, the management of the British brand claims that their car is able to overcome a ford up to 0.5 m high, which, of course, is cool, but its owner is unlikely to decide on such tests.

Interior design Jaguar E-Pace vs BMW X2

The interior design of the BMW X2 is almost an exact copy of the interior of the X1, which is generally good, but I would like something new.

In front of the driver there are well-readable devices and a multifunctional steering wheel that is comfortable to grip, and on the central part of the dashboard, which is traditionally turned towards the driver, there is a towering touchscreen display of the multimedia system, and just below the control unit for the audio and climate system.

The quality of the materials fully corresponds to the status of the car, while the soft plastic of the front dashboard, stitched with threads, evokes a special delight.

The front sports seats have all the necessary adjustments and securely fix the body of the riders in turns. Landing is low - however, this is not surprising, because to lower the center of gravity, the manufacturer had to lower the seats by 20 mm.

The second row of seats is cramped in length and width, so tall passengers will have a hard time. The only thing that pleases is the headroom, which is an order of magnitude higher than that of Jaguar.

The trunk volume of the BMW X2 is 470 liters, and with the second row of seats lowered it can reach 1355 liters.

The interior of the Jaguar E-Pace looks less sporty and more original. The driver is greeted by a stylish three-spoke steering wheel and easy-to-read instruments, which can optionally be fully digital.

In the central part of the dashboard there is a touchscreen monitor of the infotainment center, and just below - a row of auxiliary buttons and a microclimate control unit. The driver's seat is clearly separated from the front passenger.

The front seats have good lateral support and a sufficient number of adjustments, including electrical ones. The seating position is noticeably higher than the X2, but lower than the Land Rover.

The only thing I didn't like was the somewhat short driver's seat cushion, which is especially felt during long journeys.

The second row of seats is much more hospitable than the "Bavarian" - there is enough free space in length and width to comfortably accommodate even tall riders, but the headroom is insufficient. If necessary, the third passenger can also be accommodated here - however, you should not count on a high level of comfort.

The trunk volume of the Jaguar E-Pace is 577 liters, but the presence of a spare wheel reduces its volume to 484 liters. With the second row folded, the owner of the car has the right to count on 1234 liters.

BMW X 2 in Russia is represented by three power plants:

  1. 1.5-liter petrol sDrive18i, generating 140 hp and 220 Nm of thrust. With it, acceleration to 100 takes 9.6 seconds, the maximum speed is 205 km / h, and the combined fuel consumption is 6.3 l / 100 km.
  2. 2-liter xDrive20i petrol engine producing 192 hp. and 280 Nm of torque, which is enough to accelerate the crossover to hundreds in 7.4 seconds. The maximum speed is declared at around 224 km / h, and the average fuel consumption is 6.5 liters.
  3. diesel 2-liter xDrive20d engine producing 190 hp. and 400 Nm of thrust. With it, the car is capable of accelerating to a peak 219 km / h (acceleration to hundreds in 7.7), consuming an average of about 4.8 l / 100 km.

A couple of the power plant can be a 7-speed "robot" or an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The line of power units available for the Jaguar E-Pace in Russia is presented:

  1. 2-liter gasoline engine, available in two boosts - 249 and 300 hp. at 365 and 400 Nm of thrust, respectively. With them, acceleration to hundreds takes 6.4 (7) seconds, the maximum speed is 230-243 km / h, and the combined fuel consumption is 7.8-8 liters.
  2. 2-liter diesel engine, presented in three levels of boost - 150, 180 and 200 hp. at 380, 430 and 500 Nm of torque, respectively. With the most powerful of them, the car accelerates to 100 km / h in 7.4 seconds. (maximum speed 224 km / h), and with the "weakest" acceleration to hundreds takes 10.5 seconds. (maximum speed 193 km / h).

    Regardless of the type and power of the engine, it is paired with a 9-speed "automatic".

Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2 handling

Both cars have good dynamics, while BMW is noted for excellent almost sports car handling.

The Jaguar E-Pace is good too, but still falls short of the Bavarian. From the point of view of comfort, the "Briton" wins noticeably. However, this is not surprising - the family roots affect. It is also worth noting the level of sound insulation, which Jaguar has an order of magnitude better.

Price and level of equipment Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X2

The cost of the BMW X2 starts at 2.07 million rubles, while the list of standard equipment includes:

  • start-stop function;
  • recuperation system;
  • DSC, ABS, DTC, CBC, DBC systems;
  • frontal + side airbags + inflatable side curtains;
  • Rain sensor;
  • halogen headlights with LED elements;
  • Isofix fasteners;
  • light alloy wheels R17;
  • leather multifunction steering wheel;
  • heated seats for front riders;
  • a stereo system with 6 speakers;
  • media center with touchscreen monitor;
  • climate control;
  • Cruise control;
  • brake drying function, etc.

The Jaguar E-Pace comes standard with:

  • 17-inch light-alloy rollers;
  • LED headlight optics;
  • a stereo system with 6 speakers;
  • heated seats in the first row;
  • multifunction steering wheel with leather trim;
  • Rain sensor;

The minimum cost of the Jaguar starts at 2.54 million rubles, which makes it noticeably more expensive than the “Bavarian”.

As befits a premium car, both crossovers offer an extensive list of optional equipment that can significantly increase the final cost of a car.

Conclusion

So, the winner of our comparison is the Jaguar E-Pace, as it has more versatility, good pavement behavior and good off-road performance.

BMW, on the other hand, feels like an uncompromising car, the owner of which will have to put up with such shortcomings as a stiff suspension and mediocre, by the standards of the class, noise insulation. However, if gasoline flows in your veins instead of blood, then the BMW X2 is just what you need.
